Music permeates both sides of Alemany Bay Window/Redwood Coast Record Crate, so I wanted to create an audio companion and put it on actual cassette tapes for the Oakland launch party. Much more than a playlist, it is an audio collage of music, poetry, and live recordings composed primarily with two turntables, vinyl records and Serato. 

For Alemany Bay Window, the mix weaves a recording from the I-Hotel Manilatown Center in San Francisco – where I had the honor of reading in 2015 with the Club Mandalay jazz band hosted by “Mr. Z” Carlos Zialcita – with music from iconic artists from SF and Oakland such as San Quinn, Raphael Saadiq and Los Rakas. 

I also thread together a number of musical influences, including selections  from the albums that inspired the 16 “fault/line records” or “record cover sonnets” of Redwood Coast Record Crate, as well as cuts like Nohelani Cypriano’s rare groove Hawai’ian classic “Lihue” which features the session instrumentation of Uncle Kata Maduli, and a closing set which brings to life the reggae riddims of the legendary patio at Oakland’s Oasis.

The mix also features poetry from Janice Lobo Sapigao and Hari Alluri, two of my favorite contemporaries and kasamas each speaking to the evocative power of music.
